Repair 4 y.o hoover washing machine isn't spinning

Hoover washing machine is not spinning and possibly not draining efficiently. at first i thought the machine was blocked, as the draining cycle had been making an odd sound.
however now, the spin doesn't seem to be working and the machine smelt of plastic after the last use.
the machine is used at least 5 times weekly, and is about 4 1/2 years old.
capacity is about 7kg from memory.
