Repair Hitachi 42" LG panel Plasma tv hairline fractures in soldering joints

Hi,
i have a Hitachi 42" plasma (lg panel) which is out of warranty. it recently (again) started displaying a number of vertical black bars (top to bottom) which is due to hairline fractures in some soldering joints on the flexible ribbons which connect the plasma panel to the main boards (i can supply a number of pictures). the lines dissapear after a certain period due to the plasma heating up and causing the ribbon to flex and the component's solder joint to 'connect' again.
i have previously repaired it with the help of an "electronics-minded" friend - which consisted of disassembling the entire unit to get to the plasma panel and simply touching up a number of solder joints with new solder.
unfortunately my friend is overseas and i am not 100% confident in the dis-assembly/re-assembly of the unit - it's more a time-consuming job than a complex one!
