Washing machine repair - making unusual noise during spin

whenever the machine turns the drum there is quite a loud noise that sounds like something vibrating or like a noise you'd get from slipping cogs. however the drum rotates fine and works up to full speed in the spin cycle albeit with the noise. machine is a bosch maxx lifestyle wae22460au. after reading elsewhere i started the machine empty on a rinse cycle and it makes the noise straight away. same for when you switch it from rinse around to drain. possibly the water pump?
