We were lucky enough to be at the BDAV's 2013 Awards night last weekend in the Great Hall at the National Gallery of Victoria - and we were treated to a display of some spectacular, unusual and very clever homes and designs from building designers from across Australia.

Pictures tell a thousand words where houses are concerned, of course - so in the spirit of sharing (and perhaps to give you some inspiration for your own project) we've compiled a gallery of the winning homes from the 2013 BDAV Awards below. Enjoy!

You could easily be forgiven for thinking this was the Wilson id awards this year. Rose of South Yarra in Brunswick dominated for many reasons, some of which included its clever use of materials, great kitchen and overall interior design. It even took out an award for its letterbox...

Campbells Creek House - Lifehouse Design

Awards:

Winner: Residential Design - New House Up To $300K Construction Cost
Winner: Best Energy Efficient Design - Residential

This beautiful home was awarded mostly for its beauty and simplicity. It achieved a 7.7 Star energy rating, was built with sustainability in mind throughout and was built for less than $300,000.

Grand Boulevard House - Apex Building Design Studio

Award: Winner: Residential Design - New House $300K - $500K Construction Cost

This fantastic house was commended for its cost effective design, and for the way it incorporates unique features of the surrounding environment.

Nunawading - Maxa Design

Awards:

Winner: Residential Design - Alterations & Additions Up To $200K Construction Cost
Winner: Best Environmentally Sustainable Design - Residential

Nunawading's a clever alteration to an existing home, making the best possible use of existing materials and structure so as to incur the smallest capital and environmental costs.

Stompbox - Altereco

Award: Winner: Residential Design - Alterations & Additions $200K - $500K Construction Cost

Stompbox is striking alteration of an existing home (circa 1900) to accommodate modern elements which are emphasised through timber cuboid forms inside and out.

The Eyrie - Vibe Design Group

Award: Winner: Residential Design - Alterations & Additions Over $500K Construction Cost

A great renovation of an existing 70's house, keeping and improving on the positive aspects of the original home and improving energy efficiency to a 6.5 star rating.

Bermondsey - Rachoff Vella Architecture

Award: Winner: Multi-Residential Design Up To 6 Dwellings

This one's a fantastic redesign of an existing heritage building into a multi-residential dwelling.

The Family Bathroom - First Impressions Projects

Award: Commendation: Most Innovative Bathroom Design

A very personal and individual project, in which huge glass splashbacks with images of the family were used, along with under-floor electric heating, a deep sunken bath and various other smart design features.

Wharfside - Alastair McDonald of Ecotecture Design Group

Award: Winner: People's Choice Award

This spacious home balances both neighbourhood character and a slight contemporary twist -and took out this year's People's Choice award.
