A Chinese 13 storey building fell flat on its side due to 'construction errors' - see the unbelievable photos below.
It might look like a hoax, but in fact it's all very (scarily) true. On the 27th of June, 2009 in Shanghai, China, this 13 storey building in the Lotus Riverside Complex collapsed onto its side when its builders failed to take into account some pretty basic laws of physics.
Thanks Averil from Hedlen Advanced Landscape Plants for sharing this interesting story and photos.
Yes, it really is a 13 storey building lying on its side in the mud.
Workers were excavating a 4.6m underground garage on one side of the building while others piled up to 10m of excavated earth on the other side. As a result, the building experienced uneven lateral pressure from south to north (a lateral pressure of 3000 tonnes, in fact!) which was more than the pilings could tolerate. Surprise, surprise - the building toppled.
Do you think a big 'Ooops' is in order? See below for even more photos...
They built 13 stories on grade, with no basement, and tied it all down to hollow pilings with no rebar... Poor quality building work has been an ongoing concern in China for years. In the same year as this building fell down, another 6 storey apartment block in Hubei province also collapsed along with a construction pit at a building site in Nanjing.
Let's hope China can improve their work quality standards!
