There’s an elusive quality about a good staircase. Though highly functional household features which accommodate for lots of traffic, they manage to retain a fairytale elegance - an emotional charm which provides both character and cosiness to a home. Nowadays, staircases are no longer restricted by such strict conventions of material and style or, indeed, safety requirements! From homes to libraries, boutique hotels to outdoor theme parks, here are 20 amazing staircase designs bound to grab your attention.

For the more traditional...

Who doesn’t dream of a set of ornate, antique stairs to be the centrepiece of their home? Classic designs with elaborate wrought iron framings are an instant crowdpleaser - nothing boring about tradition here. These are great for living out any pokey royalty fantasies you might have or any literary daydreams, like in the famous Livraria Lello & Irmao bookstore in Portugal. Timber is the staple material.

For the outdoor adventurers...

There’s no shortage of incredible outdoor staircases around the world - from the remnants of ancient civilisations, like Chand Baori in Rajasthan, India, to modern tourist attractions, like the walkways of Pailon del Diablo river in Ecuador and the 4,444 wooden steps of the Florli Stairs in the Norwegian mountains. The surrealist movement is responsible for a great number of them, like Edward James’ gardens of Las Pozas, Mexico. Last year, the London Design Festival showcased the Escher-inspired  ‘Endless Stair’ by dRMM, a look-out constructed from American Tulipwood. What next?

For the young at heart...

Staircases with bright colours and funky patterns keep every step fun - from Moorish tiles to tinted plastic, who’d grow tired of romping up and down stairways like these? Certainly not British architect Ab Rogers, who designed the kaleidoscopic Rainbow House in Portobello Rd, London.

For the daredevils...

Many modern designs opt for the minimalist angle and they’re beautiful - but unfortunately, may also see you toppling off balance at the slightest of breezes. Freaky rollercoaster-inspired walkways like in Duisberg’s Magic Mountain in Germany don’t make for the most relaxing of promenades - and stylish residential contraptions, like HSH Architect’s ‘Ribbon Staircase’ in Prague,  constructed from 10mm thick strips of metal, would inject a bit of adrenaline into daily mundane activities! Keep your wits about you when attempting to tackle such thrills!

For those with good solid stomachs...

Us mere mortals might find it a challenge to keep our lunches down when faced with the prospect of taking a stroll on one of these bad boys. Designs like ‘Endless’ in Munich’s KPMG Building or the SenusalScaping residential project in Clapham may get you wondering at the practicality of such innovations. Too far?
