Looking for something to pass the time this weekend? Maybe you’re after a rainy day project or a way to kick-start the spring cleaning? Improving the quality of your home can be simple, easy and cheap. It might be a matter of reclaiming old pieces of forgotten furniture, making use of common household items in new ways or even just simplifying a bigger remodel job into its most pressing priority. And there’s nothing easier than putting together some new decor. Here are just three ways you could be giving your home a new look today.
1. Make your own air-freshener
If you’ve got one too many spare jars floating around the house, there’s only one thing for it - get smelly! It’s important to keep your home smelling fresh and clean, not least because guests are much more attuned to such social niceties. Unfortunately, though, it’s something which can be a real difficulty in the musty and murky depths of winter. So why not try making your own
all-natural air-freshening jars! All you need is some baking soda, a few old containers and scraps of loose-thread cloth. Baking soda is a neutraliser and it absorbs strong odours without the need for harsh chemicals. Simply fill the jars with baking soda and sprinkle with your own choice of flavourings - for example, vanilla bean, cinnamon sticks, cut citrus fruits, sliced ginger, peppermint, rosemary and many more. You can also mix in essential oils to distribute a scent equally across the powder. By fixing the cloth to the top of the jar, it allows for airflow in and out of the container, thereby quickly spreading these scents around a home. Substitute perforated cardboard if need be. You’ll notice a real boost to your mood with these recipes and it barely takes a minute to put together.

2. No-sew pillow cases
We’ve all purchased that statement cushion from IKEA and regretted it almost immediately - who knew bright pink polka dots wouldn’t stay in fashion? It’s only too easy easy to pile up cushions without removable covers - but there’s really no sense in having perfectly good ones lying about the house, so here’s a simple trick for crafting your own pillow cover from some spare textile.
Follow the tutorial to cover, fold and tie your creation. This is a great option for student dorms, sharehouses and rental properties and even just for those who are keen on a creative look.

3. Teacup garden
Yes, it’s the terrarium trend gone retro. We all know how important plant life can be for physical and mental well-being and with this project, you get just that extra little creative control in crafting a low-maintenance floral pet. If you have old teacups hidden at the back of the cupboard from nan (and even if you don’t, they’re practically giving them away at op and vintage shops), you just need to get your hands on some cute pebbles, a little soil and a mighty-fine succulent.
Repotting is a simple task and your home desk, kitchen counter or windowsill will thank you for it.
