4 Tips for choosing the right electrician

Choosing the right electrician will be a decision you'll either significantly regret or significantly appreciate. There is nothing in between! But how do you choose the right electrician?

You've come to the right place, first and foremost, because Service Central only has licensed and qualified electricians for your electrical job. We check the electricians licence and public liability insurance before they respond to your job.

Still, here are some tips for choosing the right electrician:

  • Tip #1 - Ask to see their licence card. Although Service Central also checks, you can double check, and if you want to go a step further you can also contact your state's licensing authority to make sure that the licence is relevant to the work you want to carry out.
  • Tip #2 - Check references. Feedback posted against the company on Service Central is an excellent place to start, but most businesses will also have written references if you request them.
  • Tip #3 - Check your gut. For most people, a good electrician becomes your electrician for life (or at least till you move away). An electrician that you like dealing with is essential.
  • Tip #4 - Check their range of experience. Although most electricians are experienced in a wide range of electrical work, some companies can specialise and lose contact with the developments of technology over time. This wouldn't be relevant in most common jobs like re-wiring a power point or power board, but in some types of work it's worth confirming that the business's experience is appropriate to the job.

Remember, unlicensed tradespeople (known as cowboys) operate with lower overheads (no licence fees or insurance costs) and so can often afford to charge less than a quality, qualified tradesperson. Don't get caught in the price trap - cheaper isn't always better!
