5 Awesome European Heating Innovations

There’s more to this continent than bizarrely popular music competitions! Europe has long been at the forefront of heating design, perhaps unsurprisingly - many of its wealthiest states live through freezing winters with very few sunlit hours. So for us Down Under, there’s a lot to be learned when it comes to keeping homes cosy and livable in cooler weather. Here are some of the coolest heating trends which are becoming more and more popular this side of the equator.

1. Towel racks

In a poorly ventilated house, the gap between your morning showers might just not cut it - and it’s an awful feeling to wake up to some intimate moments with a still-soggy towel. Heated towel racks are practical and luxurious and in the last few years have become completely standard in apartments across Europe. They’re also now readily available in Australia, whether online or through popular retailers like Bunnings. Wall-mounted or freestanding, and coming in a huge range of sizes, this is one helpful household addition which can be installed on most budgets.

2. Underfloor heating

Can you get much more central than a heating system which permeates all areas of the home while also remaining entirely unobtrusive? Hydronic underfloor heating was a staple in ancient Rome but has come back into fashion in a big way (and with new techniques) because its simplicity and effectiveness. Safe, even heat is hard to beat.

3. Terracotta pots

A favourite with hipsters and hippies alike, this is an ingenious way to heat up a room without a big price tag attached. Terracotta was of course a hugely popular material around the Mediterranean but you’re now much more likely to see it in Berlin’s hip Kreuzberg district. All you need are a few candles and a couple of old garden pots.

4. The Helsinki model

Once again, Scandinavia is proving to the rest of the world how badass they are when it comes to home improvement. In the Finnish capital, the excess heat generated by underground data centres is redistributed to homes, in a move which both saves everybody money and reduces the city’s overall climate footprint.

5. Car seats

If you need a little more motivation getting yourself out of bed and into the car for a morning commute, a nice heating pad may be your answer. Fitted underneath the car upholstery, these are maintenance-free and easy to use - just flick the switch! Many cars will come with this already as an added feature but you can also purchase the coverings separately - however, good quality products may need to be installed at a garage since they often require the removal of the seat itself.
