8 Hacks For Organising Your Wardrobe

Forget DVD collections and cupboards of pottery - there’s one thing we all need to keep organised and that’s clothing. Keeping a clean wardrobe makes every day easier and it only takes a little bit of effort to get everything in order. Here are some wicked ideas for maxing out your storage space.

1. The great clothing cull

It’s a timeless cliche that we wear 20% of our clothes 80% but sadly, for most people this rings rather true. It can be hard getting rid of items which no longer fit or no longer quite fit your taste, but you’ll feel a thousand times lighter once they’re bagged up and ready to be dropped off in the local charity bin. A good way to sort through the clutter is to turn all of your clothes hangers around backwards - when you check a few months later, it will be clear which items never got worn and returned.

2. Invest in dividers

Ask anyone: drawer dividers are the greatest human invention since the wheel. Whether it’s for belts, socks, underwear, accessories or even smaller clothing items, dividers help keep everything in its place and it literally takes zero time, thought or effort to maintain the system.

3. Get seasonal

If you’re pushed for space in summer, bag up your winter wear and store it outside the bedroom. Likewise, if the last thing you want to be doing in winter is sifting through shorts and t-shirts with a longing nostalgia just to find that damn beanie, it’s probably a good idea to hide them out of sight. Vaccum pack, anyone?

4. Learn your levels

For ease of access, it’s most convenient to store high-use items at around eye level, whether that’s on a rack or chest of drawers. More infrequent items can go closer to the floor, perhaps in under-bed storage, so they can be reached without exertion but also don’t become too much of an eye sore. Items you rarely use should be tucked up high, at the top of a cupboard.

5. Lighting is your friend

Installing overhead lights inside a full-length wardrobe is a great way to keep the area clean and easy to use. Use lighting carefully, since it can draw attention towards or away from storage. Well-placed lighting can minimise a piece of furniture and make it seem inconspicuous.

6. Be creative about space

Being pushed for space doesn’t have to mean relegating all of your clothing to under the bed.. just opt for a curtain-screen cupboard instead of a more traditional one with swinging doors.

7. Colour code

No, it’s not just for grandparents and nerds. Colour-coding is the ideal way to find things in a hurry, since it keeps all of your clothing perfectly arranged, day in and day out.

8. Remember small storage solutions

Sometimes it can be the smallest of things which push a space over the edge into mess and chaos! Stackable jewelry boxes are one idea - get them out when you need to and tuck them away when you don’t! Same goes for certain shoes, hats and scarves - why have them on display when they only see the light a couple of times a year?
