A Handyman's Guide to Childproofing your Home

Having children is the most rewarding experience but it is also world-changing. No longer can you leave your stairs, cupboards, oven, fridge, doors, etc unattended. Once your child starts crawling he/she will want to explore every single piece of your home. Children are unaware of the dangers of a live powerpoint or a hot tap and it is your responsibility to protect them from their own curiosity.

Here are some tips for child-proofing your home:

Childproofing the house

  • Keep emergency numbers for police, doctors, ambulance and poison information near the phone at all times.
  • Have a first aid kit, fire extinguisher and fire blanket in your home.
  • Ensure that your electrical switchboard has a safety switch.
  • Place child latches or child locks over cupboards, draws and doors.
  • Install covers over powerpoints.
  • In stairwells install a security gate.

Childproofing the Kitchen

  • Remove all poisonous substances such as cleaning products.
  • Beware of scaldings caused by stoves, ovens and cooking utensils.
  • Beware of the dangers of knives and sharp utensils and appliances.
  • Install kitchen cupboard latches or locks.
  • Install oven locks.
  • Consider a latch on the fridge to stop your child from pulling things out of or down from your fridge.
  • Consider tap covers, especially over hot taps.

Childproofing the Bathroom

  • Non-slip strips in that bathroom can be useful in guarding against slips in the bath.
  • Avoid scaldings from hot water and the potential of a drowning. Once again tap covers may be a good idea.

Other things to consider

  • Heating and Cooling: Parents are often very conscious of the temperature of the baby's room. Installing a heater or air-conditioner in the baby's room is a popular decision.
