Accountancy and Accountants: What is it and what kinds of accountants are there?

Accountancy is the art of communicating financial information about a company to business stakeholders and managers. Usually, an accountant will prepare a company statement and then an accountant adds their stamp of approval to the statement so that stakeholders trust the statement. There are different types of accountants but all three types have to become members of the Accounting Professional and Ethical Standards Board. The board is an independent body that sets and monitors standards for the accounting profession.

What types of accountants are there?

In Australia, accountants can choose between the following:

Which is the best type of accountant qualification for my needs?

It seems a little like swings and roundabouts as to which qualification is better. The CPA is more universal, but the CA is more highly regarded by big employers in Australia. Of course, your business can choose to go to a bigger company (where they've made the choice about which qualification is better) or you can do the research and choose an appropriately qualified accountant that is independent. A PNA is less highly regarded and you're more likely to find PNA's working as CFO's, financial controllers etc within organisations.

The great thing about Service Central is that you simply post your job and include your requirements, and only businesses that are best suited to do your job will respond. Still, remember to find out what kind of qualification they hold before committing - if only for your own knowledge!
