Air-con and refrigeration mechanics skills shortage

Skilled air-conditioning and refrigeration mechanics have been on the long term skills shortage register for years. We at Service Central are certain that the skills shortage is in fact a reality at present rather than a skills shortage that is projected as more skills are needed in future.

Normal market forces mean that supply and demand move slowly towards a balance where supply meets demand and demand meets supply. In a market where demand and supply are generally relatively even, competition exists between businesses. Competition is always good for the consumer, because it ensures that standards are high (ie competitive) in all things - customer service, communication, price.

But, with air-conditioning and refrigeration jobs that people need qualified technicians for, businesses may have too much work on to be able to do your job - and this means that competition is low and standards may fall.

We know that there are lots and lots of amazing customer-oriented businesses that don't need competition to ensure they keep their standards high, and we're lucky at Service Central to have our feedback system that helps us to keep the standard of businesses high. But out there in the general industry, we've heard some horror stories.

Opportunity lies in where there is an imbalance in the general industry like this. So if you're in a related field and want to branch out into something new - refrigeration and air-conditioning is a good bet. Or, if you're no longer enjoying working for someone else, becoming an air-conditioning and refrigeration mechanic is a great new career opportunity for you.
