A mature, established tree can add such beauty to a garden. So what do you need to do to make sure it stays beautiful?
Visually checking the tree yourself is important - you're looking for signs of health. Leaf size, new buds and leaves, twig growth and consistency amongst the branches from top to bottom. And a professional inspection by a tree surgeon or arborist every couple of years is also advised.
Pruning needs to be done to remove dead or diseased branches, and also to prevent branches from falling in storms or high wind. Because mature trees are usually tall this is also a not a DIY project as you'll need special equipment to carefully prune. Also, disposing of large branches can be difficult without a mulcher.
Mulching and fertilising your tree is sometimes advisable, but getting advice based on your specific soil content and tree type and age before you do is advisable.
