Cleaning your Curtains

Clean curtains can really help brighten your home and lift your mood. And it doesn't have to be the headache it may seem at first. Regular cleaning with a vacuum cleaner and soft brush attachment can help prevent dirt from accumulating.

For a full wash it is recommended that you hire a professional to have your curtains cleaned. However depending upon the material in which they're made it can be possible to wash them yourself. Some curtains will come with cleaning instructions which will make life easier for you. Other curtain materials must be cleaned by a professional, so be certain to check before proceeding.

If you have determined your curtains are safe for you to wash you need to begin by removing them from their curtain rods. Before washing your curtains all metal hooks, rings, weights, ties and extra bits must be removed, else they could cause damage during the washing process.

You should then inspect your curtains for any tears or rot. A professional can repair tears however sun rot can be harder to deal with. You also need to determine what cleaning method you will take. Some curtains can be washed in the washing machine on a delicate cycle while others are better being gently hand washed in a bathtub. Others still must be professionally cleaned. If in doubt, it is always better to contact a professional curtain cleaner rather than run the risk of ruining your curtains.

Finally, after the curtains are washed, it is worth rehanging them while they are still slightly damp as this will prevent shrinkage and ensure they drape properly.
