DIY pest control - how to prevent and control insects in your home

If your pest problem is out of control then you need to get in the professionals to deal with it for you. However there are certain steps that we can all take around the home to try and stop infestations taking hold in the first place.

Poisons and traps – there are a wide selection of these at your local hardware store. Get some down early on, if you use them properly and in conjunction with our other solutions they can be effective.

Kitchens – try and keep your kitchen spotless. Don’t leave any food out on the surface, make sure everything edible is kept in sealed containers (yes that includes the sugar) and clean and disinfect regularly to discourage ants and roaches.

Standing water – make sure there isn’t any. It’s a breeding ground for mosiquitos. This includes ensuring there are no buckets or drums full of rain water and cleaning your gutters regularly.

Fill those gaps – filling in gaps where insects and small rodents can get in the house is essential. Wire wool is really good for this as rats and mice can’t chew through it.

Garbage – seal your garbage cans tightly and don’t leave any rotting food waste lying around. It’s asking for trouble.
