The Queensland Government now requires "Don't DIY" warning signs on electrical equipment.
In a bold move to reduce electrical-related accidents and raise awareness that certain types of electrical equipment must only be installed by a licensed electrician, the Queensland Goverment has introduced a law that will force businesses selling certain types of electrical equipment to display "Don't DIY" signs.
The regulation came into effect from 1st of July 2011, however affected businesses will have until December 31 2011 to become compliant.
The "Don't DIY" signs are now required in Queensland
The"Don't DIY" (Don't Do It Yourself) signage is required on any electrical equipment that must be installed by a licensed electrical contractor ort licensed electrical worker under section 18 of the Electrical Safety Act 2002.
Some examples of equipment that must display the sign includes:
Fixed-wired electrical equipment:
Electrical accessories
Electrical parts
However not all versions of those examples listed will require the signage, for instance a light fitting or ceiling fan specifically designed for ‘DIY’ installation (connects into an existing batten holder) won't require the sign. Nor will a switch or relay designed for 12 volt automotive use.
The signage requirement will also apply to online selling and Queensland businesses found to be not displaying the "Don't DIY" sign may receive a penalty of $4,000 for individuals and $20,000 for corporations.

Do you think the "Don't DIY" signs will help educate the population and prevent electrical accidents? Do you think the regulation should become nation-wide? How do you think you will be affected by the "Don't DIY"signs? Let us know in the comments below.
I think this is fantastic and should be introduced throughout Australia!

It encourages consumers to purchase items/hire tradies who have been appropriately trained and certified, with comfort, safety and peice of mind.
A total waste of time. If a person wants to do it, they will no mater what a small notice says!

"Don't speed", yea right. Are we going to stop people from fitting mechanical parts to their car incase they are fitted incorrectly and they kill someone, because they fitted a brake pad back to front or left a brake line loose?
Australia is becoming the nanny country.
