Don't Go Camping - Go Glamping

If you like the idea of getting in touch with nature, but you don't like the idea of nature (like bugs, flies and mosquitoes) touching you, 'glamping' might be a good compromise. Glamping is a term for glamorous camping. The lightweight, tent-like shelters that makes glamping so special, are also better for the environment than traditional building techniques. Leaving you to enjoy the beauty of unspoilt nature without the itchy bites, the air-mattress that deflates during the night (onto an uncomfortably positioned branch) and dirt in places you didn't know dirt could get. Check out these 8 spectacular Australian glamping sites, then decide whether you're going to want to go camping again:

Bamurru Plains

Point Stuart, NT

Just west of Kakadu National Park on the Mary River floodplains you'll find incredible birds and wildlife. You'll also find Bamurru Plains, a bush camp that is the definition of the ideas behind glamping. You'll be connected to nature, but still able to enjoy the comforts of a high class hotel room. Luxury and style in the remote Australian wilderness - what more could you want?

Permanent Camping

Mudgee, NSW

This cozy retreat is nestled onto the edge of a ridge in remote sheep station. It is designed as a getaway for one or two people; more like a permanent tent than a traditional holiday home. The structure opens up to provide a wrap around verandah or closes up when not in use or to protect it from bushfire. The interior, carved from recycled ironbark, suggests a rustic simplicity that reminds us of homesteading - a welcome break from our constantly connected world. While this glampsite isn't available for rent, it does serve as good inspiration for those of us lucky enough to have a rural property begging for a simple, but stylish retreat.

Eco Beach

Broome, WA

With sustainability in mind, Eco Beach lets you experience the pristine and untouched Kimberley region without spoiling it for future generations. Whether you choose to glamp it with a safari-style Eco Tent, or go high class with an Eco Villa is up to you. Either way, it's hard to deny how spoilt you'll feel with your own piece of pristine Australian coastline to enjoy.

Kangaluna Safari Camp

Gawler Ranges, SA

The open mallee bushland is home to a range of native Australian wildlife. The Kangaluna Safari Camp takes full advantage of this wild location with glamping tents and 'swagons' - a unique cross between a swag and a wagon. Kangaluna's owners have developed the accommodations using their own lifetime expereince of living in a dry climate, so you'll be comfortable even in the area's sometimes harsh conditions. The camp has used recycled materials throughout and uses only rainwater for the private showers and flushing toilets - environmentally sensitive home comforts, that's what glamping is all about!

Longitude 131

Uluru, NT

In terms of location it doesn't get much better (or more 'central') than this. With the world's largest rock (AKA Uluru) right outside the door, Longitude 131 takes full advantage of its incredible location and stunning view. With fifteen luxury tents, you can enjoy sunset over the rock while relaxing in the crisp, white linen of a king-sized bed. After the world-famous red sunset, enjoy stargazing and stories of the local Aboriginal peoples' dreamtime before drifting off to sleep in the silence that only the desert can provide. As far as iconic Australian experiences go, this tops the list - might as well do it in glamping style.

Paperback Camp

Jervis Bay, NSW

Tents perched above the ground give Paperback Camp the sense of camping out in a treehouse - a luxury treehouse, that is. Located in Jervis Bay, an untouched region just two hours from Sydney, the Paperback Camp has something for everyone - increadible coastal scenery, oneness with nature, clear, calm water for swimming, and magnificent white beaches for relaxing. Just over two hours drive from Sydney on the unspoilt south coast of NSW, Jervis Bay is a nature lovers paradise with spectacular coastal scenery, clear and calm water for swimming and pristine white sand beaches for strolling and relaxing on...

Sal Salis

Exmouth, WA

Hidden in the dunes of Western Australia's Cape Range National Park, Sal Salis is remote, beautiful, and surprisingly luxurious. Just metres from the water's edge, the tents of Sal Salis have untapped access to the World Heritage Ningaloo Coral Reef. The tents are raised on platforms to improve the view towards the stunning coastline and crystal waters. You'll be surrounded by birds, kangaroos and even breaching whales, but with boardwalks around the camp you don't even have to get your feet dirty!

Wilson Island

Great Barrier Reef, QLD

Try to tell me you've never dreamed of having your own personal island and I'll tell you that you're a liar. Live out your Gilligan's Island fantasies (or Lost, depending on how macabre you're feeling) by visiting Wilson Island, a tiny island off the coast of Queensland (that could be all yours). There are only 6 luxury tents on the island, so if you can get together a group of twelve friends, the untouched wonder of this island is all yours to enjoy. The only thing left to decide, is who's going to be the Skipper?
