Electrical and gas Compliance certificates - when do you need one?

Compliance certificates are like a warranty, and protects you against problems that arise later. For most electrical and gasfitting work in Australia, a certificate of compliance must be given to you. Different states in Australia have slightly different rules about when a certificate is required, so it's always good to check with your state's energy management department.

  • Electrical compliance certificates

In Victoria, you get two types of electrical compliance certificates - prescribed and non-prescribed. A prescribed certificate covers major wiring and must be checked by a qualified inspector. This will be arranged by your electrician.

A non-prescribed certificate covers minor work and doesn't need an inspection but an audit can be done on the work.

In New South Wales, you get one type - the Certificate of Compliance Electrical Work. It's uniquely numbered and a copy needs to be submitted to NSW Fair Trading. Fines of $1000 are given to electricians that don't issue a compliance certificate.

Your certificate gives you peace of mind that the work's been done by a qualified professional and has been carried out to the standards required.

  • Gas compliance certificates

A licensed gasfitter must give you a compliance certificate after they install your gas appliance. The certificate of compliance confirms that the gasfitter will be required to return to fix any problems as a result of faulty installation, and you can also be sure that the installation doesn't breach the manufacturer's warranty conditions.

Cheaper jobs for no compliance certificate?

Never agree to this, no matter how much less money the work costs you. You'll have no guarantee that the work is compliant and meets the manufacturers warranty. In some states, you can be fined along with the tradesperson.
