Flat pack furniture is synonymous with IKEA, the Swedish flat pack giant! And that's where it started, when an employee broke the legs off a table to fit it into his car and then re-assembled it at home. Whether you believe this story or not, flat pack furniture has taken the world by storm, and it's easy to see why.
Consumers win because they save money on delivery fees and they pay a lower price than they would for pre-assembled goods. The manufacturers win because they have lower staff costs, and lower storage space costs and lower transport or distribution costs. By eliminating waste from the process of selling furniture, they can offer competitive pricing and probably make higher margins too!
So yes, it's a compelling product. Easy to pick up and take home in your car, but then you have to put it together yourself. And some people treat IKEA furniture like big Lego blocks, and have a fantastic time fitting the furniture together, using the directions or just winging it. But then there are other kinds of people. People who find it frustrating and every piece they buy turns into a far more difficult exercise than it's worth.
So until IKEA bring in flat pack 'fool proof' assembly by LED directions you have another choice. Post a job for a handyman to assemble your furniture for you. For them, it's a piece of cake - and you'll still come out ahead of your budget.
