Guide to Painting Exterior Surfaces

There is a variety of surfaces outside the home that can be painted including painting bricks, masonry, cement render, painting concrete tiles, driveways, patios, and painting fibreglass sheeting. This guides groups each of these exterior surfaces into the various external painting techniques and walks you through the different approaches to painting.

Painting Bricks, Cement Render and Masonry

These surfaces can often be painted with two coats of acrylic paint without the need of a sealer. It is important to clean the surfaces before painting and ensure that the surfaces are dry before painting. If you find that after painting these surfaces there is a brown or purple tinge to the paint then you may need to repair that area by applying a sealer and repainting.

Painting Concrete Driveways and Painting Concrete Patios

Its important to note that you cannot paint bare concrete surfaces before acid etching them. You acid etch concrete surfaces by swabbing the concrete surface with a solution that is one part hydrocholic acid and 3 parts water. Once the concrete surface is prepared for painting, allow for at least 2 coats of the paving paint you have selected.

Painting Concrete Tiles

Whilst most concrete tiles are sealed their concrete sealing can erode after 15-20 years. You can tell if the concrete sealer has eroded as the colour becomes dull and patchy. So if its time to reseal the concrete you should firstly apply a bleach solution to clear the concrete tiles of moss, mould and lichen, and scrub and wash with a high-pressure water cleaner. Once clean, two coats of exterior acrylic paint are applied to the concrete tiles as a top coat.

Painting Fibreglass Sheeting

You can paint corrugated fibreglass sheeting as well as painting other plastic sheetings often used in pergolas and sundecks. Before painting scrub the sheeting with a pad of steel wool and a mild detergent in water. Rinse and dry the fibreglass sheeting before painting with a water-based acrylic paint. This painting process can extend the life of your fibreglass sheeting.
