Guide to Painting Interior Surfaces

Painting inside the home is an important part of every home renovation. Guiding you through the painting projects inside your home, we have outlined the various surfaces inside the home and how to paint them. Interior painting can include painting gyprock or plasterboard, ceramic tiles, laminates such as laminex, and painting texture coatings.

Painting Gyprock or Plasterboard

Gyprock (otherwise known as plasterboard) is what most interior walls are made of. When unpainted gyprock has brown cardboard on the outside and a white chalk like substance (gyprock) on the inside. Thankfully painting plasterboard is rather straight forward. To achieve a flat paint finish you normally apply two coats of a plastic paint. To achieve a semi-gloss or sheen finish you use a water-based sealer followed by two coats of paint.

Painting laminates

Popular laminates such as laminex require special attention when painting. You should use a specific laminate paint. To paint, degrease the laminate surface, sand back the laminate to a matt surface and paint with two coats of laminate paint.

Painting Texture Coatings

To achieve the decorative effect of textured coatings or even use textured paints to hide cracked or uneven surfaces the key is the types of paint purchased and types of rollers that you use. There is a variety of textured rollers ranging from a smooth rippled effect, a sand effect and even a bold rough look. When deciding to go for a textured look beware that its often an expensive choice as textured paints do not cover as much area as standard paints, also the coarser textures can attract dirt and can be hard to keep clean.

Painting Ceramic Tiles

Firstly you need to ask yourself whether you really need to paint ceramic tiles. Painting ceramic tiles is notoriously difficult, especially tiles with a high glaze. You can find tile paint that will achieve the desired outcome for wall tiles. However, it is recommended that you avoid attempting to paint glazed floor tiles as foot traffic will quickly remove the tile paint you have laid.
