Here’s How To Prepare For Summer

With the hotter weather rolling in, you might want to start thinking about how to prep your home for the coming months. Australian summers can be brutal and can certainly take a toll on your property, whether urban or rural. So here are a few tips for getting everything into shape in the lead-up to the holiday season.

1. Get your car serviced

Christmas - it’s a time of mass migration and long family road trips, so November’s an ideal month for making sure your vehicles are in good condition. Whether it’s checking tyre pressure, getting the cooling system flushed or just testing the A/C, car maintenance is something that shouldn’t be overlooked.

2. Update your cooling mechanisms

Retrieve old fans from the cupboard, clean out the freezer and check your fly-screens aren’t in need of repair. Consider installing UV protection on your windows, such as sheets of reflective coating or blinds, and make sure your A/C unit isn’t pumping out hot air.

3. Revitalise the garden

With rainfall still in living memory, late spring can be a good time to mulch your garden beds. Pests and diseases can be exacerbated by soil dryness and warmer temperatures so take the time to review your irrigation system.

4. Be fire-conscious

If you live in the temperate or arid areas of Australia, summer always brings a few unwelcome visitors. As well as ensuring your family has a bushfire action plan, be sure to dispose of all leaf litter in your yard and prune back plantlife which sits around the perimeter of your home. Test your fire pumps, hoses and sprinklers.

5. Slip, slop, slap

Everyone knows to slap on some sunscreen in the height of January but those pesky UV rays can often sneak up on us early - in fact, even on cooler days you should be taking care to be conscious of sun damage. Station a bottle of sunscreen in the bathroom or laundry and make sure your sunglasses have a high UV rating.
