How GM imagined the self-driving car in 1956

Thanks to Google & Tesla self-driving cars are now just around the corner, but its surprising to find out that the idea has been around for a long long time. Check out this super detailed video that General Motors put together way back in 1956 (nearly 60 years ago) outlining how they envisioned that self-driving cars would work in the future. Extremely impressive.

They really had thought of a lot, but a few things that modern self-driving cars probably wont have:

  • Cigar smoking (thanks to the AMAZING air conditioning).
  • Control tower having to sync your direction and your car.
  • Self-driving lanes - although some governments might find this a good idea for safety reasons?
