It’s no secret that we live in a visual society. Everyday we are bombarded with a huge number of images through advertising and social media; apps like instagram and snapchat are attracting more and more users every minute and the internet has allowed all of us to have practically unlimited access to every image imaginable, from kooky cats to hilarious political memes. It seems like there’s never been a better time for expressing yourself through image - after all, a picture speaks a thousand words!

You’ve probably heard of Pinterest. A lot of people are introduced to it through beautiful envy-inspiring photos of Facebook friends - of their weddings, home improvement ideas and ideal travel destinations. And that’s the wonderful thing about this website - it allows you to collect ideas and inspiration in one easily-accessible place! So how does it work and what can it do for you?

What is Pinterest?

Pinterest is an internet company that allows users to make profiles for collecting interesting and inspiring visual material from around the web. It was launched in 2010 but has grown exponentially to include a massive worldwide follows of passionate pinners!

What’s really unique about the user experience is that it’s incredibly easy to navigate - rather like a real life pinboard of random things you mean to come back to at some point. It’s  the perfect way to just gather and store ideas for later; the representation of all of those vague nigglings and interests you have floating around in your head. But it’s also more than personal - it’s a social  network and a way to connect and interact with friends and celebrities based on common passion. Even for a non-user, Pinterest provides the means of tracking fashion trends, funny internet movements, worldwide tributes and advocacy campaigns.

How exactly does it work?

Firstly, it’s completely free to register and use - no cost at any stage of the process! Once you’ve signed up, you create your own boards based on a specific theme or area: for instance, “kitchen renovation ideas”. You add to your boards by pinning images from the main page database with the “Pin It” button. You can search for specific things or simply have a browse and enjoy the images other people have been posting and pinning. Like your Facebook newsfeed, what you see on Pinterest is generated specifically for you - the images you’ll be shown are matched with what you have searched and pinned before. This makes it easy to find plenty of inspiration in no time at all. You can also upload your own images or even Pin images on certain websites and then organise all of them together in a specific order or format.

What can it be used for?

Pinterest is essentially visual bookmarking so it can really be used for any purpose you choose to use it for! Planning events, discovering DIY projects, collecting recipe ideas, exploring paint samples, creating a fashion scrapbook, making a travel bucket list, looking at gift ideas, following celebrities - there’s so many options to choose from.

What makes it so good?

Pinterest is the easiest way to collate ideas and things you’ve discovered on the internet, which makes it a really valuable tool on a practical level. When it comes to home and business renovation, planning is a major part of the process and it’s often important to develop your vision in specific detail to allow any contractor or service provider to navigate the ins-and-outs of the job. That’s why we love Pinterest at Service Central! It’s the perfect planning tool. You can connect with Service Central by pinning inspiration from our home improvement articles or from specific businesses that you’d like to keep on your radar for future projects.
