How to hang a door

Hanging doors is notoriously difficult and time consuming, although irritatingly a professional carpenter will make it look very easy and quick to do. For the sake of your blood pressure it is usually a good idea to let a professional handle this task.

However if you decide that you want to try taking on this job yourself the first thing to do it make sure that the door frame that you’re fitting in the door into is square and in good shape. There is little point trying to fit a new door into a twisted or rotted door frame and you’ll be better off refitting the door frame than trying to cut a new door down to fit an old frame.

The first thing to do when fitting a door is to measure it several times, in various places to ensure that it will fit the door frame that you want to fit it to. Then although it might sound kind of obvious make sure that the door is the right way round and the correct way up. Do not try and reshape the door to the frame until after it has been hung.

You then want to lift the door against the frame and mark on the door where the handle/latch and hinges need to go in pencil. These will need to be chiselled out so that the hinges sit flat into the door. Make sure that the door is held off the floor when you’re marking it up so that it will swing smoothly when hung. A standard internal door will need two 100mm hinges although if you are using a heavier or hardwood door then you’ll need at least three hinges. Corresponding spaces need to be chiselled out for the hinges on the door jam. It’s really important that the hinges sit completely flush with both the door and the door jam and do not sit proud of or sink into the wood on either side.

Once you’ve chiselled out the spaces for the hinges you need to start by screwing the hinges into place on the doors. Stand the door in place and slide props underneath to raise the door to the right height before screwing the hinges to the door jam. This job is terribly fiddly and is generally much easier if you have someone to lend you a hand. Make sure that all the screws are screwed in tightly as a loose screw in the hinge can also prevent the door from swinging normally.
