Currently in Australia there isn’t really any legislation that specifically covers off the revenue earned in this manner. As far as we can see, whether or not it is considered taxable income depends on the reason for installing the solar panels.
If it can be shown that they were installed specifically to make money then they may be considered as taxable income. However this would mean that all the expenses associated with the production of the electricity would be tax deductible and the solar panels would become a depreciating asset.
Nine times out of ten solar systems at home are not going to be considered as taxable as they would be considered to be for personal use or a hobby and not as a money making scheme. However if the solar system is one at a commercial site it is usually going to be subjected to income tax. Anyone who has solar power at their place of business, or is considering installing one, should speak to their accountant about the tax implications of owning such a system.
