Measuring your Windows for new Curtains

Measuring your windows for new curtains may seem simple and easy, but there are definitely a few different factors you have to consider to ensure you take the right measurements. Getting those measurements wrong can be an unnecessarily costly process.

Firstly, have a solid plan as to how your curtains will look and where you want them to sit. Will your curtain rod be positioned inside the window frame or sit above? Will the curtains finish at the window sill or hang down to the floor? Once you have your plans determined it's recommended that you do a sketch or draft, to scale if possible, to help you to visualise what you're wanting. You can use this sketch to later draw on the measurements as well.

Now you can get your tape measure out. First you'll want to measure the window frame, then the curtain rod. The curtain rod length will determine the width of your curtains - if you want your curtains to have a gathered, wavy effect then you will need to double this number. If you want to be able to push your curtains across to either side of your windows you'll need to ensure there is sufficient space on the curtain rod.

Next you need to measure the length of your curtains. This is from the curtain rod down to where you want the curtain to fall, whether that's just below the window sill or all the way to the floor or somewhere else again. Remember to mark these measurements onto your diagram.

Finally, measure everything again to check for errors. It's easy to make mistakes but very difficult to fix those mistakes after you've cut out the material. Check your diagram to ensure you aren't missing anything and there you have it - you've measured your windows for new curtains.
