Paint additives: A different type of insulation

Most Australians are aware of the benefits of insulation, and usually think of insulation as batts of material installed in ceilings, walls and under floors. But you can also improve your home insulation by adding substances to your house paint.

So what are paint additives?

Essentially, paint additives make regular paint into thermal paint, as the additives change the paint into a 'reflective radiant barrier'.

Can you use them on interior or exterior surfaces?

Both! With exterior paint, the additives will help to reflect heat away in the warmer months. With interior paint, it will reflect heat back into the room.

What are they made from?

A mixture of ceramic microspheres - minuscule hollow ceramic balls. They add no colour, smell or chemical 'activity' to the paint and don't increase or decrease fire resistance.

What are the benefits of paint additives?

Basically, the benefits are the same as any insulation. A reminder what these benefits are:

  • Reduce energy use for heating and cooling
  • Paint additives are also easy to apply when you paint normally, are non-toxic and can be used in a variety of places.
  • Additives can also reduce condensation problems.
