Pest control: How are termites exterminated?

Extermination can be a long process, with no guarantees of success. It is highly skilled work and an expert needs to help you with it. DIY pest control is not a great idea - you risk contaminating water supply, soil and having no effect. The experts will choose from two broad strategies but then have alternative solutions depending on your property or risk needs.

  • Soil barriers - this is also a preventative measure. Chemicals (either a repellent to turn the termites away or a poison that the termites take back to the nest with them) are inserted into the soil by digging trenches or drilling holes into the ground.
  • Traps/baits are set - termites are taught to eat wood that is then replaced with a chemical that the termites eat and take back to the nest to pass on to other termites, slowly eradicating the nest.
