Plumbing emergencies: How to tell if your drain is blocked

Blocked drains are exceptionally annoying - they're messy to investigate and clean, hard to ignore and can become more complex than you expected.

So how do you tell if your drain is blocked?

  • Drain is slow to to drain or won't drain. Any changes to the draining speed also indicate blockage, and you can catch a blockage before it becomes a problem by being aware of the draining speed.
  • Bad smells coming from the drains. Even if water drains speedily, a bad smell usually indicates a blockage of some sort - often one that will escalate.
  • Sucking or gurgling sounds. These sounds originate from water going around blockages. Of course, if your drains have always made that particular sound you probably don't have anything to worry about, but changes in the 'gurgle' could be a symptom.
  • Exterior grates overflowing. Sometimes drains from the kitchen or bathroom will drain perfectly but then the drain further down the chain can be blocked. Overflow grates outside that have signs of waste or debris around them are symptoms of drain blockages.
