Plumbing emergencies: What causes blocked drains?

Blocked drains happen for many different reasons, usually one of the following:

  • General buildup of grease, oil or food debris. These items go down liquid but can solidify in the drain and cause a blockage.

Prevention tip: Install a garbage disposal in your sink to chop up any larger pieces of debris, or protect your drain with a plug hole filter. Follow large amounts of melted fats with hot water.

  • Hair in bathroom drains. This is a main cause of bathroom blockages, especially in larger families.

Prevention tip: Plug filters are great for preventing hair from going down the drain.

  • Flushing things that shouldn't be flushed. Barbie dolls, kitty litter and more - often the toilet is used when it shouldn't be.

Prevention tip: Be careful about what you flush!

  • Tree roots growing into drains. Over time, tree roots can grow into drains and either break them or compact them.

Prevention tip: If you have bigger trees and bushes close to your home, you may want to get the pipes checked regularly or perhaps even prune the tree/bush to restrict root growth. This won't work with all plants but ask your local nursery for advice.

Drain unblocking businesses can also diagnose your issue while fixing it, and help you prevent blocked drains from happening again.

  • Clearing blocked drains or that run from my home to the main sub-soil drain leading to the main sewer shaft? As the warm weather approaches here in Australia, I want to know what (if any) chemicals or other products are helpful in restricting such material in problem drains. Any suggestions or ideas appreciated!
