Have you worked out your New Year's Resolutions yet? Why not include your home in the plans this time around? To get you started we've got some great renovation ideas you can implement in 2012!
2012. I'll be honest, it's still a bit of a shock to me that we're there already. It seems like only last year people were freaking out over the 'millenium bug', but here we are 12 years along and it seems to have gone faster than a blink!
This is why New Year's Resolutions can be so important. They can give you a goal (or a deadline, depending on which motivates you better) to achieve certain things before the year's out. Usually they're personal, whether it's progressing in your career (or finding a new one altogether!) or just remembering to eat better and exercise more.
Well, this year we think you should set aside some of those New Year Resolutions for your home. How often does it get a look in? Unless you're a remodelaholic, it's likely your home still looks and functions pretty similar today as it did back in 2000. Make 2012 your home improvement year. Now is the best time to start planning and budgeting for the year ahead! Just think of how amazing your home will be in 2013!
Go Solar
Installing solar panels is a current trend that's being embraced by every body - and with good reason! Solar panels enable you to generate your own electricity, which in turn saves you money and the environment. Excess power that you generate can be fed back into the grid, enabling other people to benefit and, to top it off, the power companies will pay you for it. Learn more about Solar Power.
Install a Solar Hot Water system
Different to a general solar system, solar hot water systems are specifically for heating your home's water supply. You may choose to just install a solar hot water system without the solar panels that go into a full PV System. Find out more about Solar Hot Water.
Create a Green Roof
Turn your roof into a personal water catchment area by diverting your downpipes into water tanks. The water can then be easily used on the garden, for washing the cars or even as drinking water provided you've got special filters and the correct plumbing installed. Alternatively, turn your roof really green - by turning it into a roof garden! Find out more.
Retrofit your Kitchen
Not sure you've got the time or the budget for a full kitchen makeover? You're not the only one! However that doesn't mean you can't do anything to spice up the kitchen. Some simple tweaks can go a long way to improve your kitchen. Check out our ideas for kitchen retrofitting - the key principle here is small changes for a BIG effect!
Renovate the Bathroom
How often have you looked at your bathroom and just wished for something different? Perhaps the shower looks dated and can never seem to get clean, or maybe the tiny cupboard under the sink simply isn't enough storage space for everything you need in your bathroom? Now is the time to make your resolution! Find out more about bathroom renovations.
Give the garden a makeover
With water restrictions being in force for much of the past few years around Australia, most of our gardens are looking a bit underwhelming. However instead of giving up on the garden, why not give it a makeover? Landscapers can suggest appropriate, low maintenance plants and you can even tie it in with your water tanks to create a truly self-sufficient garden! Why not add a few veggies as well while you're at it? Check out these garden landscaping tips!
