Ever owned an older home? You'll know the ins and outs of plaster walls. They are durable, smooth, sound insulating and cost effectiveness ensures that plaster has always been a popular choice. However, over the years plaster cracks when subjected to stress. In Australia, the environment is usually responsible for encouraging cracks in your plaster, but sometimes cracks can be symptomatic of a deeper structural issue.
Before you get the plasterer in to fix the walls, it's a good idea to check whether the cracks are caused by minor environmental issues or structural issues.

You have some choices when replastering your wall. If you have plasterboard in place, it could be a good idea to replace the plasterboard altogether. Plasterboard can also be repaired but some plasterboard is beyond repair so ask your plasterer for advice. Plasterboard can be corrected with filling and sanding or even skimming (a thin layer of new plaster over the existing), especially if the damage is not significant. For absolute perfection, replacing the plasterboard is a good option.
Replastering your walls is a great way to get a fresh start - especially in older homes where there may be several layers of wallpaper, paint and much wear and tear on your walls from paintings and pictures over the years. It is often a smart idea to investigate replacing the plasterboard ceilings at the same time.
