Restore your cement tile roof to its former glory. This simple guide explains the process a roof restoration professional will undertake to make your cement tile roof look like new
A modern roof restoration begins with replacing all damaged and broken tiles. It’s important to hire a professional for the task, especially if your roof is difficult to access or steep. They will have the right equipment and tools to ensure that the job is done safely. They will also have the know-how and experience to make the repairs without causing further damage to your roof! Tiles can easily break and crack if you walk across them without the proper care and consideration for your roof. Do you have a terracotta tiled roof? Once any damaged tiles have been replaced, the next step is to clean all dirt and moss from the roof. Moss, dirt, lichen and fungus will all build up on tiles over time. A high pressure clean done by a professional roofing expert will quickly and easily clear this build up of mess away and leave your roof looking much nicer. The roof restorer will then finish up with a quick rinse of the gutters, ensuring that they’re clear of any debris.
The next stage is the rebedding of ridge caps. The caps are the tiles that run along the edges of the roof. Because of their position the cement ‘bed’ that holds the ridge caps in place can be prone to cracking as the house shifts. Rebedding cap tiles involves lifting the caps, clearing out all the old cement and replacing the caps with a new bed of sand and cement.
The new bed of sand and cement then has flexible pointing applied to it to prevent future cracking. This process is called repointing.
Next the whole roof is treated with a fungicide. This sterilisation process is done to kill any remaining moss spores on the roof and to prevent the growth of any more fungus or lichen. This is an important step, as moss and lichen have both been known to severely damage roofs as well as detracting from the general appearance of the house.
Now a sealing coat is applied to the tiles and capping. Roof sealer coats the surface of the tiles, waterproofing any tiles that may have become porous and preparing the roof for the final coloured layer of membrane.
Finally the roofing membrane is applied in the colour of your choice. Two coats are used to ensure the colour is solid with a clean, professional finish.
