Solar Inverters and how they are rated

Inverters are all rated, and these rating should tell you three things; the continuous rating, the half hour rating and the surge rating. You need to consider all of these when purchasing an inverter. You also need to be sure that the inverter you buy is suitable for your personal requirements so it’s always a good idea to get some specialist advice!

  1. Continuous rating – this will tell you how much power you can use continuously before the inverter shuts down due to overheating.
  2. Half hour rating – this will show how much power you can use in a half hour window before the inverter shuts down. You’d want to look at this if you occasionally have short periods of very high energy consumption.
  3. Surge rating – this will need to be at least 5 seconds, as some domestic appliances require a surge of power to get the up and running.
