What is a solar panel? Read on to learn all about solar panels and how they can help you save money and save the environment.
Solar photovoltaic (solar PV) systems (also known as solar panels) convert lightenergy from the sun into electricity. An electrical charge is transmitted to an inverterwhich converts direct current into alternating current (the current that can be usedwithin your home).
Installing a solar PV system can have a range of benefits, which include:
Not only can you save money on your electricity bills and help the environment, you could also make money from installing a solar PV system. Solar power systems also add long term value to your home besides saving you money on bills. Currently eachAustralian State or Territory has a different system for collecting and distributingexcess electricity generated. However, each of the state government schemes arerolling into one Australian scheme. From January 2011 the Australian Governmenthas established a central point for the transfer of small scale renewable energy credits(RECs). Any excess electricity generated from small scale technologies, such as solarPV used by households, small businesses and community groups, can be sold to gaina REC. The initial price will be $40 per REC with no cap on the amount of creditsthat can be created.

This article discusses solar PV systems, those used to convert light energy from thesun into electricity. This is not to be confused with solar hot water heating systemsthat use the sun’s heat to heat hot water. From what I hear, it costs around $3,000 to have a 3kw system installed once you get all of the government rebates back.

Is that about the right price?
What does a 3kw system get you? Does it end up saving you money on your electricity bill, or does it take years and years for you to get your moneys worth?
Peter, I'm not sure whether its a good investment or not as I haven't done the sums personally. However, I think it will turn out much much cheaper in the long run because electricity prices continue to rise. Our home electricity bill went up by 20 percent last year, and if that continued then it would be double the current prices in just 4 years. How scary is that!!!

So whilst I haven't done the actual calculations, I feel that if solar panels let you effectively lock in today's price of electricity for the next 30 years (the life of the solar panel) then its got to be a great money saver!
Plus you get to do your bit for the environment too.
Cheers
