When your painting project doesn't go to plan you need not despair. Many painting problems are quite common and can be easily fixed. Here is a guide to solving painting problems with painting solutions, with a list of 8 common painting problems and tips on how to fix them.
1. Paint doesn't spread easily
When your paint doesn't spread easily the paint may need thinning. If this is the case consider applying thinners to the paint. Another cause may be that the atmosphere is too hot or too cold. If you're indoors you may be able to control this with your homes heating or cooling. If you're outdoors you may need to wait until the temperature is more conducive to good painting.
2. Paint is not covering the surface well
The opposite to the first painting problem, if your paint is not covering the wall well then the paint may be too thin. It may also be caused if the surface needs sealing first. This is also a common issue when you are painting walls that have darker colours underneath than what you're painting with. If this is the case then you will have to apply more than one coat of paint to ensure that you can't see-through the new paint.
3. Sagging Paint
If you apply paint too thickly then it can sag. The solution is to apply paint with less paint on your brush or roller.
4. Paint is forming into drops
This often occurs around windows and doors or at corners and joins in materials as a result of silicone sealants underneath. Paint forming into drops can also be caused if you have oily or waxy surfaces. If the paint drops is caused by silicone (such as no more gaps) then you may need to coat the silicone sealants with a thin layer of paintable silicone which can be painted the same day. Another option is removing the silicone and using Selleys's Paint over Silicone. In both cases overpainting must take place within 48 hours.
5. Paint is not drying
Paint not drying is often caused by humidity, you may overcome this by using your home's air conditioning system or even a large fan may help. Alternatively, check that the pain has not been mixed incorrectly.
6. Paint has loss of gloss
If you apply paint to late in the day or have not primed the material that you're painting onto or haven't undercoated sufficiently to stop absorption of the gloss paint then you may have loss of gloss. To avoid this issue ensure that the area being painted has been properly prepared for gloss paint.
7. Paint Blistering
Sometimes when you apply a light paint over a dark paint the new paint can blister as a result of the heat building up from the darker colour underneath. To avoid such a paint blistering issue it is recommended to where possible strip back the old dark colour to the raw material before applying the new lighter paint colour.
8. Paint Cracking
Paint cracking can be caused from applying a 2nd coat of paint before the first coat of paint has dried sufficiently.
