Your ceilings are the often neglected part of a room. When you consider changing the colour scheme, rarely will you think about the options for your ceiling. Here are a few common problems and ideas to solve them.
Ceilings attract dirt and dust as much as any other surface, but they do take longer to get dirty. Attach a damp cloth to a broom and wipe the ceiling regularly to avoid messy cleanup jobs when the build up gets too much.
Over time, the plasterboard can sag - especially if it's the old style horsehair plasterboard or affected by damp or heavy light fittings not properly installed. Sometimes, saggy ceilings can be fixed by reattaching an area to the struts in the ceiling space and filling the nail head in with plaster - but sometimes they're too far gone and this will just cause a different but still not smooth effect.
Replacing ceiling boards is not a hugely expensive job but it's tricky to get the boards in place, and the professionals have great tools to help them to the job quickly, easily, and cheaply.
The oldest trick in the book is to paint a ceiling with a slightly lighter colour than your walls. Without any major renovations you can achieve the illusion of a higher ceiling. Of course, if you're set on the idea of actually having a higher ceiling, you'll need a builder to advise on your options.
Usually, no one complains about a ceiling that's too high, but in a really small space a high ceiling can feel strange. Taking up the space with a larger than usual light fitting or painting the ceiling in a slightly darker colour than the walls will work nicely. Suspended ceilings are also an interesting option but will need a builder's advice.
Period homes can have plaster ceiling roses which look beautiful but over time changes in the ceiling or structure can cause the rose to break slightly. It's not necessary to get rid of it completely, as a skilled renderer or plasterer can often repair a ceiling rose and return it to it's former glory. They're expensive to replace to investigate that option first.
