Some Surprising Energy Saving Ideas

We all know that incandescent light bulbs use lots of energy and that leaving the fridge door open isn't the way to save on your running costs, but there are some more surprising ways you could be saving energy:

  • Zap your vegies in the microwave instead of cooking them on the stove. Efficient and fast, your microwaved vegetables will use 2/3 less energy than on the stovetop and leave you with more time to enjoy your evenings.
  • Minimise your effort and maximise your energy saving by using the dishwasher instead of hand washing. Dishwashers use less energy and water than hand washing, so stack up the plates and relax.
  • Fill your fridge with beer and food! You probably don't need an excuse, but a full fridge is actually more efficient because it conserves the cold when the door is opened. Keep your fridge around 80% full for maximum benefits and you may notice a reduction in your power bill.
  • Better still, turn off your extra fridge/freezer to save between 10-20% on your energy bill! Just make sure you get everything out of it first!
  • Use cold water to wash your clothes and save money on your hot water service. You can expect to reduce your energy bill by around 5% simply by making the switch to cold. One thing to ensure though is that you use a detergent that is suitable for cold water because the enzymes in regular detergent may not break down in cold water leaving you with a gluggy mess.
  • Replace air-conditioner filters. Blocked and dirty filters can prevent airflow and cause the system to run longer and use more energy. Replacing the filter will save money and create a safer environment for asthma and allergy suffers.
  • Making an effort to save water has the double benefit of saving energy too! By limiting your showers to 3 minutes, installing water saving shower heads and tap fittings, washing in cold water or investing in a front loading washing machine you'll be saving on your water and energy bills!
