Swimming pool safety laws

Over the years, there have been many changes to the laws around swimming pool safety. The fact remains that your pool and your neighbours pool can be dangerous for your children unless the proper precautions are taken.

There is some detail to what you need to comply with based on your property size and when the pool was installed - for a checklist specific to your property click here.

The basic rules

  • Pools and spas must have a fence around it. The fence should be at least 1.2 metres high (some documents are quoted as saying 1.5 metres) and have vertical bars no more than 100 mm apart and horizontal bars no more than 900 mm apart.
  • The gate must be self-closing and child resistant, and you must use it - don't prop it open permanently.
  • Keep climbable items away from the fence.
  • Always be there when there are children in the pool.
