The Fencing Checklist

When building a new fence or having a fence installed for you by a fencer there are many things to consider before you begin, during the fencing process and after the fence is constructed.

These fencing tips are designed to help you through the fence building process:

  1. Have you consulted your neighbours? Do you plan to share the cost of the fence with your neighbours? If so, have they agreed to split the cost?
  2. Have you properly marked the fence lines?
  3. Do the marked fence lines match the property title?
  4. Does the fence you plan to build meet council regulations? Many councils have fence height restrictions. Some councils have heritage overlay over front fences. Some councils do not allow front fences at all.
  5. Have you or your fencing company obtained a building permit for the fence?
  6. Are you aware of where services are located on your property such as gas and water. Its important to avoid these services when building the fence.
  7. Ensure that the fence meets the manufacturing specifications, taking into consideration factors such as whether the fence post holes are at the right depth and distance apart.
  8. To avoid the wood rotting, its recommended that timber fences do not rest directly on the ground. Similarly, you should set your wooden fence posts in concrete.
  9. Check that the fence is straight. Check that the fence is true.
  10. Check that gates open properly.
  11. Ask for a copy of the written warranty from the fence manufacturer and the fencing company that installed the fence.
