I just got an email from John Brumby! Seriously, I thought it was spam. Absolutely no idea what I registered for to deserve this personal attention… Oh wait, he sent it to millions of people!
Still, regardless of that, the Victorian governments action plan for climate change is comprehensive. We brought you a teaser a week ago, which outlined thenew FiT ratethat is part of the action plan. This plan is however far more detailed. I've summarised it for you below, hopefully picking out the most important parts relevant to you.
Before we get into this, let's just say that Service Central is a company that fully supports the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and improved sustainability. We believe that the people in the trades and home services industry are well-positioned to positively influence decisions made by consumers on a daily basis that improve their individual sustainability and help to achieve the goals set out by government. Green electricians, green plumbers and green builders are all working together to help their customers make sustainable decisions - anything from installing solar to choosing local timber.
As quoted from the website, "The costs of tackling climate change, whilst significant, will be lower if the world acts now. But the costs will rise steeply if action is delayed". Interestingly enough, the motivations for government to have an action plan for climate change is exactly the same as an individuals - reduce short term expenses, reduce long term expenses and add value (to either your home or the country's infrastructure) and reduce negative impact on the environment. I can't think of one issue in history where the government's motivation was so similar to an individual's motivation.
The main goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% as compared to 2000's levels. This is not only a reduction but a turning back of time for the past 10 years. What that translates to is a 40% reduction in each person's emissions. As inefficient hot water services and home heating and cooling make up almost 70% of each household's emissions, it's no wonder that previous strategies have targeted insulation and solar hot water, and that they continue to support this through grants and subsidies.
What does the Action Plan mean for individuals?
