Tiler's price: How much does hiring a tiler cost?

When you’re hiring a tiler their hourly rate will usually cover the cost of labour and materials such as grout/adhesive but not the cost of the actual tiles. Tiling is a skilled job and it’s a good idea to have a look at some work that they’ve done previously. Choosing a tiler based purely on cost can be risky, so be sure to either look at previous work and/or check previous customers' feedback online.

What is a tiler's call out fee?

Generally speaking tilers don’t charge a call out fee, or a fee to provide a quote for work.

What is a tiler's hourly rate?

The cost for laying wall and floor tiles is usually fairly similar in most cases, but the amount charged will vary depending on the type of product that you want to use.

There’s a rough guide to the cost of laying different types of tiles below

  • Ceramic Tiling (per square meter): $88-$152
  • Quarry Tiling (per square meter): $88-$120
  • Vinyl Tiling (per square meter): $41-$96

Generally a good tiler will cost you between $25-$80 per hour, but remember you can always ask the tiler to quote for the entire job rather than on an hourly basis.

Where could there be extra costs?

There may be some extra costs associated with laying tiles, especially if you want to have them polished or sealed or if you want to have a waterproof membrane laid underneath the tiles. You’ll need to ask your tiler about these and they’ll be happy to give you an additional quote for the work.

Products or materials cost?

It’s normally up to you to supply the tiles for the job and the cost will very much depend on the material and quality of tiles you want to use. It’s usually worthwhile speaking to your tiler about the type of tiles you want to use, as many professional tilers may be able to get you a trade discount on the product.

  • when paying the tiler, according to sqm done, do we include windows and doors or should we take that out from our measurment??

  • I've only verified this with one tiler, but the answer is that usually windows and doors are included in the calculation of square meterage because edges are more complex and the lack of tiling in between makes up for it. But not all businesses will do it this way, so best to confirm with the businesses that are quoting.
