Tips for maintaining your air conditioning unit

Proper maintenance of your air conditioner will also save energy. Be sure to do the following:

  • At the start of each hot season you will need to inspect the seal between your air con unit and the window frame to ensure it makes contact with the unit’s metal case. This seal can be damaged by moisture, which will allow cool air to escape from your house. If the seal has become degraded or hard and brittle then it will need replacing. Replacing the rubber seal regularly will save you money on your electric bills.
  • Check your unit’s air filter at least once every month. Clean and replace the filter as necessary. Regular inspections can lower your air con’s energy consumption by as much as up to 15%.
  • Occasionally pass a stiff wire brush through the unit’s drain channels to clean them. Clogged drain channels will stop a unit from reducing humidity and will also result in increased moisture which can discolour wall and carpets.
  • In the winter months make sure to disconnect and cover your unit (if you can) or preferably remove it all together and store it somewhere dry.
