To renovate or to have renovations done?

I'm in two minds - we've bought a old clunky house with lots and lots to fix, and I keep having second thoughts about whether to continue doing some jobs ourselves, or whether to get someone else to do some of it. Maybe I'm just hoping for someone other than my husband to blame when it all goes horribly wrong...

For example, we removed the plasterboard from one of the walls we want to eliminate, and I pictured the house falling down around our ears! I'd be much happier with an expert's advice - but the MAN thinks he's got the plan, and doesn't need to ask. Is this the new version of asking for directions? Such an cliche.

So I'm all for getting someone in to price the job and talk us through it, but he thinks it's rude to ask for a quote when we want to do the job ourselves. I agree, but then maybe we should be able to pay for the service - it's the advice we're after, not the work! I wonder if Service Central's trusty registered businesses would be happy with that proposal - especially since if the advice was good it could turn into more work (because let's face it, there are some things it's not cost effective or even possible to do ourselves).

What do you think? To do or to get done? Is it price? Is it experience? Would you pay for a professional to give you advice rather than do it yourself? Would Service Central's businesses go for it? Would it be used? Email info@servicecentral.com.au with your comments!
