What do you need to supply bricklayers with?

Bricklayers often supply labour only, providing only their own hand tools. If you hire a bricklayer in this way, its up to you to ensure that all materials and especially the sand of their choice is ready on site. Also, to complete their role bricklayers will need access to a cement mixer, water and a water barrel. As the brick wall is constructed bricklayers will also require scaffolding. Any features in the brickwork will need to be marked on the plan, including profiles.


Who do bricklayers work with?

  • Brickies work closely with the form workers and concreters on the foundations
  • Brickies work with the carpenters and framers on joist positions, bearers and structural engineering key points, including slinging the end trusses to establish the rake up the gables and to bed the wall plates
  • Brickies the plumbers and roofers to point in any flashings

What do Brickies do?

  • Lay blockwork foundations, including honeycomb sleeper walls and bed plates for suspended timber floors
  • Build in below-ground drainage exit lintels
  • Build in cranked ventilators for beam and block floors, or airbricks and cavity sleeves
  • lay infill blocks and position floor beams
  • Build superstructure brickwork and blockwork and install cavity insulation as work progresses
  • Create openings for windows and doors, fit windows and door frames if appropriate
  • Bed wall plate, build up gable ends and position steel joists and beams
  • Lay first floor beams and infill with blocks
  • Build chimneys, including internal brick features and fireplaces
  • Point up flashings and trays
  • Build feature walling to garden and landscaping

The right time for bricklayers

  • If the brickie is laying the foundation blocks they'll need to be on site from the get go. In any case, your brickie will need to programmed to start along with the construction of the superstructure.

How much does a bricklayer cost?

  • Most brickies will charge by the 100 bricks or blocks and the price will vary depending on the type of brick being laid or the size of the block and the height of the structure. Prices range from $100 per hundred for standard bricks at ground floor level to twice as much for feature walls or work on second floor levels.

    Thanks for the note. So if it's $950 for a thousand ($95 for a hundred) if you're lucky, what's the usual 'unlucky' price? In addition, which state are you talking about as we know the prices are different for each.
