In mid-2009, it was announced that Canberra's trees were to be 'renewed', because 20% to 40% of the trees are a danger to the community. Uproar ensued and continues today.
Firstly, there was a lot of confusion about what the plan actually was. The residents had visions of all the trees falling to chainsaw wielding, maniacally cackling tree-loppers. But the plan is to 'renew' the trees over a period of 20 years. Then there was also some confusion about the term 'renewed'.
Tree lopping is understood in two contexts depending on who you speak to - lopping technically means to prune or trim, whereas when some people say it they mean to cut the tree's top off completely.
It seems that the debate between residents and the Department of Territory and Municipal Services will hold up the renewal plans until the community largely agrees to the renewal and replacement program - how they're going to do that remains to be seen!
