What is a foundation and what kinds are there?

A foundation supports the weight of the building that is placed on top of it. The foundation spreads the load of the building to the ground below and supports the building evenly. Inadequate foundations mean that the building is at high risk for plaster cracking, or the structure eventually collapsing.

Foundations come in various different forms

Shallow or deep, foundations can be made from wood, steel or concrete, in various different styles

Strip foundations

Support in strips underneath the walls.

Raft/mat foundations

A solid continuous base under the whole building.

Pile foundations

Pillars or piles (commonly known as stumps) are sunk deeply into the ground and the building is supported by spreading the wight over the pillars.

Slab foundations

Slabs have footings for extra support and a solid concrete slab.
