What is an air chisel?

Air Chisels are an absolutely genius invention. They work on a similar principle to jackhammers, but they cycle faster as they’re much smaller. They’re great for saving time. When used properly they can cut as much as two thirds of the time off a job as compared to using a traditional chisel and hammer combination.

Most tool hire shops and businesses will rent out air chisels, if you don’t feel like investing in one of your own.

There are some basic rules to follow when using these - safety first!

  • Ensure that you have the correct PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for the job. Work boots, gloves, eye protection and ear defenders are a must.
  • Ensure that you have selected the correct tool bit for the job. Using the wrong attachment can cause a huge mess in a very short space of time!
  • Make sure that the tool bit is touching the surface that you want to use it on before you pull the trigger.
  • Try not to use the air chisel for periods of longer than ten minutes to avoid any chance of vibration white finger.
